The Catalogue Raisonné of

Richard Ernst Eurich RA OBE

(1903-1992)

Richard Eurich was a 20th century British figurative artist who followed his instincts rather than the prevailing fashions.

Stubbornly hard to categorise, he is best known as a marine painter and an official war artist, but he explored a wide range of subjects and styles. His pictures are full of delight and humanity, often playful or mysterious. He commands a loyal following of collectors, critics and artists who think his work is highly underrated and deserving of more attention. His family have published this site to strengthen and extend that respect.  more . . .

Explore the timeline

Richard documented quite a lot of his life through his diaries, albums and a memoir.

We have drawn on these and several other sources to create a timeline biography that puts his personal life, his work life and the historical events he lived through in context.

Read Richard's autobiography

As the Twig is Bent is Richard's memoir about his childhood, his education, and the events leading up to his first solo show in 1929. We have published it in full on the site, illustrating it with Richard's original selection of images and adding a few others to give a glimpse of his life and his thinking in those early years.

The Muse (1929)

Richard played the violin as a boy and later owned a clavichord as well as an upright piano. His friend John Bickerdike introduced him to Renaissance music and the viol family which appear a lot in his work of the 20s. He even wrote some music using some form of counterpoint.

The Art of Richard Eurich

by Andrew Lambirth, published by Lund Humphries, September 2020

Richard's family commissioned this book and then went on the road to photograph little known Eurichs so that the author Andrew Lambirth had the broadest and most up to date perspective to work from.  We were surprised and amazed by many of the pictures that turned up.  Andrew was too. Readers just keep telling us, "I had no idea of the range of his work".
